Why Gen Z Prefers Sustainable Aluminum Wine Bottles over Traditional Glass Ones
Gen Z may have received a great deal of unwarranted criticism as of late, but if there’s one certainty that they surely cannot be criticized for, it’s the fact that they genuinely care about the environment and our planet as a whole.
It feels like we’re currently dealing with the effects of climate change every other week at the moment. Whether it’s sweltering heatwaves, record snowfall and cold snaps, wildfires, droughts, or turbulent winds, it’s clear our weather is changing, and we could be to blame. Add to that, the fact that our oceans are littered with plastic, landfill is overflowing, and carbon emissions are far too high, and you can understand why Gen Z are so concerned.
When it comes to the environment, one of the easiest things we can do to play our part is recycle our packaging. Take wine bottles for example. In recent years, aluminum wine bottles have proved extremely popular, particularly amongst Gen Z drinkers, who actually prefer it to glass.
So, why do Gen Z prefer sustainable aluminum wine bottles over traditional glass? Let’s find out.
Gen Z Willing to Spend More on Sustainable Wine Bottles
In recent years, the alcohol markets across the globe, particularly in the wine sector, have undergone a great deal of change, with sustainability at the forefront. As it turns out, there are many reasons for this.
To begin with, making your business more sustainable is the right thing to do from an ethical point of view as it is literally helping our planet to thrive. In a business sense however, making your business more sustainable means that it is likely to be more profitable.
According to extensive market research, Gen Z, and indeed, consumers in other age brackets from other demographics, have openly stated that they would be willing to spend more money on sustainable companies and sustainable products. That means, when buying a bottle of wine, if faced with the prospect of buying a regular bottle of wine in a glass bottle, or spending more on a wine in a sustainable aluminum bottle, they would likely choose the aluminum bottle instead.

Changing Drinking Habits
For Gen Z of a legal drinking age in their country, alcohol drinking habits are changing. Drinkers of that particular demographic are not just drinking for the sake of drinking, or to get a buzz or get drunk, they’re drinking to enjoy the experience.
Rather than buying the cheapest, and strongest bottles of wine they can find, Gen Z drinkers are instead trying new flavors, low ABV expressions, alcohol-free wines, and wines with unique packaging and unique marketing campaigns.
If you want unique, you don’t get more unique than an aluminum wine bottle. For centuries, glass has been the material of choice for wine bottles all over the globe. Today however, aluminum is proving to be increasingly popular. It’s sustainable, it’s eye-catching, it serves as a great USP, and it stands out and offers drinkers something different.
Aluminum Wine Bottles are Infinitely Recyclable
While glass wine bottles can be recycled an infinite amount of times in theory, glass is far more breakable than aluminum, which is actually incredibly strong. When a glass wine bottle is broken, it’s likely to be cleaned up quickly and thrown straight into the trash, where it will then make its way to landfill.
Aluminum on the other hand, is infinitely recyclable in every sense of the world. In fact, it is one of the most widely recycled materials on the face of the earth. You can recycle aluminum an infinite number of times, and repurpose it however you like.
Best of all is the fact that it loses ZERO strength, durability, or quality, regardless of how many times it has been recycled. Recycle an aluminum wine bottle once, one hundred times, one thousand times, or one million times, each time it comes out it is just as strong and as durable as it was when it was brand-new.
Recycling Aluminum Wine Bottles Uses Less Energy than Recycling Glass
Another reason why sustainably aware Gen Z wine drinkers are choosing aluminum wine bottles instead of glass is the fact that aluminum recycling uses a fraction of the energy needed to make it from brand new.
Recycling an aluminum wine bottle requires just 5% of the energy required to make aluminum from new. That’s 95% less energy, which means fewer emissions and a lower carbon footprint.
Glass wine bottles may also be recyclable, but recycling them uses more energy than recycling aluminum. The process also usually takes longer, which means that glass, though still hugely more sustainable than plastic, is not as great for the environment as aluminum. To Gen Z drinkers, it’s small things like that that really matter.
Aluminum Wine Bottles are Lighter
As Gen Z drinkers look for more sustainable alternatives to their favorite beverages, aluminum wine bottles are once again coming out on top. This is due in part to their weight.
As sustainable as glass is, one of its major drawbacks is its weight. Glass is breakable, so in order for glass wine bottles to become strong and durable, they need to be made thicker. The thicker they are, the heavier they are, and that becomes a problem.
Glass wine bottles are much heavier than aluminum wine bottles, which means that transporting and shipping them requires more energy, uses more fuel, and creates more emissions than aluminum wine bottles. Aluminum may be very strong, but it is also extremely light in weight. This means transporting it from A to B uses less fuel, less energy, and creates fewer carbon emissions.
