Naturally, this type of wrapping is usually used to bottle up liquids such as water and oil, or relatively thick substances such as cremes or pastes. Because of this, they are highly popular in both the foods and cosmetic industries. Generally speaking, glass bottles are a more expensive alternative to the plastic version. The premium look and professionalism brought forth by glass packaging is, however, what makes the investment all worth it.

What are glass bottles?

Generally speaking, glass bottles are long cylinder shaped canisters made from glass that are used to hold liquids. Often, they are either topped off with a lid, cap, or cork. Bottles can be made from any type of material but, as their name already suggest, glass bottles have been crafted out of glass. Besides glass, popular materials used to form bottles are aluminum, plastic, and ceramics.

As for the size, glass bottles come in a range of different volumes. Depending on the industry, large or small glass bottles are more popular. Generally speaking, the volume of these bottles range from 5ml up to 5 liters. Whereas larger sized bottles are more popular in the food and beverage industries, small glass bottles can be found more often in the cosmetic and beauty product industries. Regardless of the content, the popularity of these bottles is mostly thanks to their premium look and high durability. Glass bottles are mostly used for liquids whereas thicker substances are usually stored in small containers, jars, Boston rounds, or vials.

Glass bottles bring along many advantages over other packing materials. Especially their design and premium look make glass bottles stand apart from other wrappings. Glass bottles are available in any color and shape. They are furthermore fully customizable which brings along interesting possibilities to create your own custom-designed bottles. In some cases, this has led to truly artistic masterpieces with award-winning designs. Examples of such artistic bottles are the ones used for storing high-end alcohol such as Cognac or Whiskey. Thanks to their beautiful bottle and colorful content, these alcohol bottles truly can be considered a piece of art on their own.

What are glass bottles made off?

Small bottles come in all forms and volumes and can be made out of almost any substance you can think off. Plastic bottles, glass bottles, aluminum bottles, you name it. The most common material is, however, glass. Glass bottles are everywhere. Ranging from the food to the medical and makeup industry - this wrapping is immensely popular among companies worldwide. Nevertheless, many of us do not know that these bottles have actually been around for decades. Just like clay jars, glass bottles have been a common wrapping throughout the history of man. In fact, the oldest bottles found date back to 100 B.C. and originate from South East Asia. Findings in Europe furthermore show that the Romans were using bottles already around 1 A.D. You might not actually realize it, but glass bottles, jars, and jugs are one of the oldest methods to store liquids.

So, glass bottles are made from glass. But how is glass made? Well, believe it or not. Glass is actually made of molten sand. People heat up sand until it melts which then turns in to molten glass. As such, it is a 100% natural substance.

In the past, sand was heated up after which it would be thrown into a box. Once inside the box, people would slide in a mold made from clay. When it hardens, it would form itself around the mold and take its outline. After the glass has cooled down and hardened, people would remove the clay mold and what was left was a primitive glass bottle or jar. This technique was applied until the year 1BC. By then, people invented the blowpipe which allowed for easier glass making. The blowpipe allowed people to add more volume and different shapes. This was the first step towards modern day bottle making. In fact, skilled workers still use the blowpipe today to craft hand-made premium bottles and pieces or art.

Although the blowpipe truly revolutionized the industry over 2000 years ago, the end results and clarity of those bottles was still nothing compared to the ones we create today. The industry truly changed around the 1880s with the invention of the automatic blowing machine. From that day, people were able to produce glass at an industrial scale and of much higher quality than before. Hence, the popularity of this way of packing and dispensing goods grew enormously. Today, we are able to create clearer, smoother, and purer glass bottles than ever before.

How to make a glass bottle?

Glass bottles and jars are both made in a similar way. They have been around for thousands of years and understandably their production method has changed over time. Today, there are two main methods to make these bottles. These include the Press & Blow and Blow & Blow techniques.

The first method, press & blow, is usually applied when making jars or containers with a wide mouth. As such, it is not popular for making bottles. The Blow & Blow technique, however, is mainly applied for making glass containers with a longer and more narrow neck such as vials and bottles. With this technique, one uses compressed air to press a gob (a cylinder of molten glass) into a mold. Because the gob is shot inside the mold with high pressure, it creates a long and narrow neck. Once in place, the second blow of air is shot through the newly formed bottleneck. This second blow then creates a wider ending below the neck which allows a bottle or jar to form. Now, the parison (simply put a half-finished bottle or jar) is flipped over after which it is placed back inside the mold. As a result, a newly formed bottle is created.

Once the glass has taken the form of a bottle, it has to be cooled down in order for it to harden. When making the bottles, the cooling down process is just as important as the actual shaping process. When cooled down in a wrong way, the glass may actually splinter or crack which will completely ruin the bottle. This is why an annealing oven is used to slowly reheat and cool down the glass bottle or jar in order to make it stronger. If this process is not applied, the finalized product can shatter or break very easily from temperature changes or little impacts. When the bottle has completely cooled down, it’s time for testing and inspection. After passing this stage, the bottles are ready for use and will be shipped to companies and consumers around the globe.

Advantages of glass bottles

Small glass bottles bring along a number of advantages when comparing their usage over that of other packaging materials. Naturally, its most obvious benefit is the premium look glass bottles have. They look solid, high-end, and are ultra-clear transparent. This makes glass bottles great for displaying colorful liquids such as oil, sauce, and drinks. Besides looking great, they also feature a premium touch. Glass bottles are solid, durable, and simply feel and look much more professional than wrappings made from, let’s say, plastic or tins and containers. Thanks to this, small glass bottles are the number one choice of packaging for many high-end beverage and cosmetic companies around the globe.

Besides having a stunning appearance, clear glass bottles have so much more to offer to companies and end users. In fact, this type of wrapping brings along several benefits that are hidden to the eye. These offer great advantages to both your product itself as well as your branding strategies.

One of the main advantages glass bottles bring along is the fact that they do not affect the taste of the content. Additionally, they are great at preserving the original flavors of your beverages for a much longer period of time than other wrappings from, let’s say, plastic or aluminum. This because glass does not contain any chemicals that can possibly mix with the content. Added to that, it also offers a great barrier against outside air and moisture. This will further prolong the shelf life of your goods. Studies have shown that 80% of end users choose glass bottles, Boston rounds, jugs, and jars over other materials such as metal tins or plastic jars.

What else sets these bottles apart from other wrappings is the fact that it does not erode over time as plastic jars and bottles do. In order for glass to erode, it first has to be physically damaged. This allows your wrapping to stay of good quality for a much longer period of time which makes them more appealing and healthier compared to other packaging options. Bottles are furthermore 100% food-safe and BPA-free. Thanks to this, you never have to worry about chemicals and contaminants. It is a 100% natural product and is, in fact, the only wrapping described as ‘’fully safe’’ by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Finally, there is one more important benefit glass bottles bring along. They are one of the most sustainable and environmentally friendly packaging materials available today. Bottles can be easily disposed of and fully recycled. Thanks to this, they don’t leave any environmental footprint at all! In the next chapter, you can read all about the environmental benefits as well as the recycling of small glass bottles.

Glass bottles environmental benefits

At uCan-Packaging, we put a high importance on offering sustainable and environmentally friendly packaging materials. We believe that all companies should be aware of the impacts their wrappings have on the environment of our planet. This is why we choose to solely sell environmentally friendly wrappings such as glass bottles, metal tins, tin containers, and jars.

In fact, glass bottles are among the most environmentally friendly choices you have when it comes to wrapping up your goods. Our bottles have been crafted solely out of natural substances and are 100% recyclable. Added to that, small glass bottles can be used over and over again without them losing any of its original quality. The truth is that glass is one of the only wrappings on the globe that is considered to have an endless recycling life. What else sets it apart is the fact that it has an extremely fast recycling time of merely 30 days. This makes it very easy to dispose of, recycle, and reuse.

When you look around, I am sure that you have noticed the many glass recycling containers located around large shopping centers. Also, I’m sure that you have returned empty glass bottles to the market before so that companies can clean and reuse them. The latter especially happens with lager, wine, and cider bottles. In order to reduce their environmental impact, many companies who use bottles collect their empty wrappings from consumers in return for a little fee. These collected bottles will then be cleaned for future usage. This saves the company money and furthermore lowers their environmental footprint.

Besides returning your empty glass bottles to the store, you can also reuse them yourself. Many consumers keep the bottles for the storage of homemade lemonade or as a simple decoration piece. They are furthermore popular among artists and DIY enthusiasts who use them in their art projects. No matter how you look at it, glass bottles and jars are one of the most sustainable options to wrap your items.

What are glass bottles used for?

In many industries, glass bottles are considered to be one of the most premium wrappings available to hold and dispense liquids. In fact, large and small glass bottles are among the most popular packaging materials available today. Because of their narrow neck and thick body, they are perfect for holding (semi-) liquid goods such as drinks, sauce, and oils. Squeezable tubes and bottles made from plastic are furthermore used for cremes and pastes in the cosmetic industries.

Nowadays, the most popular uses of glass bottles are makeup and oils, deodorant, medicine, and beverages. The more premium looking ones are furthermore often used as perfume bottles. Perfume bottles come in different sizes, shapes, and colors which truly makes them stand out from the rest. Tiny glass bottles with a content of 1ml to 3ml are furthermore used as sample bottles to store small amounts of perfume. Because bottles bring along a large number of advantages, you can find them in nearly any industry. After all, bottles offer one of the most efficient ways to keep liquids in place and to dispense of them without negatively influencing the content. In the following chapter, we’ll have a closer look at the different types of glass bottles and caps.

Different type of glass bottles and lids

Depending on what you wish to use your glass bottles for, different types of lids and closing mechanisms may be more useful to you compared to others. Just like jars and vials, glass bottles come with a number of different caps. Below, we will cover the most common type of caps found on bottles which are; droppers, rollers, pipettes, spray, pump, screw caps, swing tops, and corks.

Dropper Bottles

These glass bottles are also called droppers and usually come with volumes that range in volume from 1ml to 120ml. These small glass bottles have been equipped with a special plastic piece which keeps the content from streaming out all at once. Instead, this top piece creates small drips, thus allowing it to dispense the content slowly. Dropper bottles are popular bottles especially in the cosmetic industry where they are used for oils and other types of liquids. The hole size of your droppers can be adjusted based on the substance that is stored inside. For thicker liquids such as oil, a larger dripping hole is used compared to those used for thin liquids such as water.

Roll-on Bottles

Glass roller bottles are small bottles that have been equipped with a tiny ball. This ball usually is made from metal or fiberglass. The purpose of this ball is dispensing the contents of a bottle evenly in a thin layer over a surface. Like this, it prevents all content to stream out at the same time. Roll on bottles are often used for medicine or essential oils. Think for example about mosquito repellents or deodorant sticks.

Pipette Bottles

These small bottles are similar to dropper bottles in the way that they allow you to easily dispense a small amount of liquid at once. The difference is, however, that this type of bottle comes with a special lid. This lid has been equipped with a soft rubber ending and a long glass tube. When placing the tube inside a liquid and squeezing the rubber cap it will fill itself up. Now you will be able to lift up the filled up lid and carry it around without needing to worry about it leaking out. To dispense of the content, softly squeeze the rubber squeezer on your pipette dropper bottle and it will slowly come out drip by drip. Like regular dropper bottles, these bottles are mostly used for cosmetic goods and medicine.

Spray Bottles (Sprayers)

A spray bottle, also called a ‘’sprayer’’, usually comes with a small volume ranging from 1ml to 250ml. Larger sizes are also available, however, these are often made from plastic instead. Glass spray bottles come equipped with a special spray cap that, when pressed, creates a sort of mist. This allows you to dispense liquids in thin layers. A spray cap bottle is usually filled up with a thin substance such as water-based products. They are most commonly found in the makeup and medical industry.

Pump Bottles

Another common bottle type I’m sure you have come across before is the pump bottle. A pump bottle is similar to a spray bottle. It comes, however, with a larger pump which allows you to dispense thicker liquids such as cremes and lotions. You commonly find a pump bottle used for cosmetic goods such as body lotions and shampoo. Additionally, they are often used on soap dispensers.

Screw Caps

These type of caps are the most common and basic type of lid for any type of packaging material. You find them on bottles, jars, vials, metal tins, small containers, and more. In some cases, screw caps can come in combination with one of the lid types described above. This particular type of lid is used on both large and small bottles alike. They bring along easy usage and high convenience. As a result, they are applied in any type of industry. To make your glass bottles tamper evident, you can choose to use a safety cap or to use plastic shrink bands.

Swing Tops

Another classic lid type that you’ll often find on large and small glass bottles alike are swing tops (bail closure). These bottles come with a hinged type of lid that can be easily removed by a simple swing. Swing tops are popular on both bottles and jars as they create a unique and stylish design. They can be commonly found on beer- or lemonade bottles but are also often used on decorative bottles. Although not used that often, bail closures can still be seen as a classic among bottle caps.

Corked Bottles

A corked bottle has been sealed off with a cork. Perhaps the most famous example that everybody knows would be a wine bottle. Corked bottles have been around for decades and can certainly be considered a classic. Although mostly used for wine, nowadays you can also find corks on small bottles and jars that are used for decorative purposes. The fact is, corked bottles simply have something special and they look beautiful. When combined with premium clear glass bottles, they truly give your packaging a stunning finish.
